Avoid One Thing
Description
Long a member of Boston's punk aristocracy (thanks to previous stints as a member of both Gang Green and the Mighty Mighty Bosstones), Avoid One Thing bandleader Joe Gittleman has elected not to rest on his laurels in the wake of his last band's demise. This is his second album as frontman for Avoid One Thing; on the first he acted as leader of a shifting supergroup lineup, but on this one the band's membership has coalesced into a power trio featuring Gittleman on bass and lead vocals, guitarist Amy Griffin on lead and backing voice, and drummer John Lynch (replacing Dave Karcich, who died tragically of a brain aneurysm in 2002). The alternating boy/girl vocals give Chopstick Bridge a refreshingly unusual flavor, and Griffin's goofy alt-country turn ("Airplane," only 30 seconds long) brings an equally welcome note of levity to the program. Other highlights include "Armbands and Braids," Griffin's aggro-pop "All That You've Heard," and the Bosstones-ish "Renegade." Strongly recommended. Rick Anderson, All Music Guide
